The solution that became a problem: Disposable masks
Disposable masks became the quick fix in an uncertain time. Rules changed often, guidance differed by country, and public opinion was deeply split. Single-use masks were a cheap convenience, but costly in the long run: constant repurchasing, inconsistent quality, and massive amounts of waste. Most people didn’t enjoy wearing them, and no one liked seeing them end up in nature, streams, and forests.
Replace single-use with reusable masks
Make a comfortable mask people will like to wear
Machine-washable at high temperatures for maximum hygiene
Unique designs to stand out from the monotonous blue masks
Our solution: Reusable masks with custom design
At first, the idea was to create skin-toned masks in a wide range of shades — inspired by the Black Lives Matter movement prominent at the time, promoting diversity, and helping masks visually “disappear” in public spaces. That’s where the name MASKIN came from: mask + skin. But the consumer market quickly became saturated, and sentiment was clear — most people didn’t want to spend money on masks. So we pivoted to businesses, who were required to provide masks due to government regulations. For these clients, we offered custom designs that strengthened their branding and gave employees a higher-quality, more comfortable alternative to existing options.

More about MASKIN
Market
A new opportunity
The pandemic shook markets and supply chains across the globe. Overnight, companies and governments had to adapt, scaling protection fast while navigating uncertainty.

Strategy
Masks for everyone
Selling to consumers quickly became saturated, as cheap masks flooded the market. From global brands like Nike to the grandma next door with a sewing machine, everyone was offering the same thing: a mask. Businesses, however, often struggled to procure reliable local supply at scale, and that’s where MASKIN filled the niche, standing out with higher quality and custom designs.

Operation
Uncertain times
Changing regulations and shifting consumer sentiment were the hardest parts. But we kept moving by delighting customers of all sizes with custom designs, and the best proof came from the feedback: employees actually enjoyed wearing them. It helped us push through months of uncertainty, when we never knew if we’d still be in business a few months later.

Results
A step to a healthier planet
We sold over 10,000 masks, helping prevent 100,000s of disposable masks from ending up in the trash. For every mask sold, we planted a tree, so we can all breathe a little freer, for longer.
